Life
After his brother Joseph De Grasse became successful as a director in the film business, Sam De Grasse followed him and played his first role in a film in 1912. By 1915 De Grasse played small and large roles in different genres and mostly embodied romantic heroes. After playing the role of Senator Charles Sumner in David Wark Griffith's film The Birth of a Nation , Douglas Fairbanks became aware of De Grasse and used the actor for the first time in his 1916 film The Good Bad Man . In the same year, De Grasse starred in Griffiths Intolerance .
In Allan Dwan's 1922 film adaptation of Robin Hood , De Grasse played Prince John, while Fairbanks starred in the title role. After Robin Hood , De Grasse shifted more and more to the role of the villain , like Talleyrand in 1927 in Fighting Eagle , a Pharisee in Cecil B. DeMille's epic King of Kings from the same year or James II in The Man Who Laughs from that year 1928. De Grasse, who only appeared twice in sound films, in Wall Street (1929) and in Captain of the Guard (1930), left the film business in 1930. The uncle of the cameraman Robert De Grasse has appeared in more than a hundred films in his career and worked with directors such as Erich von Stroheim , Paul Leni , Lewis Milestone and John Ford .
