A. Arnold Gillespie

Albert Arnold Gillespie (born October 14, 1899 in El Paso , Texas , USA ; † May 3, 1978 in Los Angeles , California , USA) was an American special effects expert and art director .

life and work

A. Arnold Gillespie studied at Columbia University and the Art Students League of New York before joining Paramount in 1922 in the film industry . After moving to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1924 , his activities were set designer , animator and art director until 1936 , although he could not be pinpointed on a specific topic. From 1936 until his retirement in 1965, he then headed the special effects division at MGM . During this time he was awarded an Oscar five times , including one for Ben Hur . One of his best works, Alarm in Space , was nominated for an Oscar, but in 1957 the award for Best Special Effects went to The Ten Commandments .

Due to his high productivity and more than forty years of activity, A. Arnold Gillespie was involved in hundreds of film productions. There are 230 entries documented in the Internet Movie Database , but according to the International Dictionary of Film and Filmmakers it could have been up to 600 productions; to explain, if one includes the "undocumented" or those not mentioned in the credits.
