Heaven Vienna

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heaven Vienna is the longest existing house clubbing in Vienna . It is currently taking place at irregular intervals at various locations.

history

The event was founded in autumn 1989 by the architect Walter Bauer (later at AGPro ) as Heaven Gay Night Vienna in the U4 . It was named after Heaven in London, which opened in 1979 and quickly became the largest gay disco in Europe. It was the first real house club in Vienna and always took place on Thursday, a commercially bad night out. Arthur Singer, whose sister Karin Löffler was the manager of the U4 at the time, was in charge of the first line. Johannes Hoschek started out as a waiter in Heaven and later became a co-organizer. Holger Thor (aka "Miss Candy"), who was friends with Singer and Löffler, started there as a bouncer, helped out more and more often, then also took care of the flyers, the shows and a lot of other things. Singer got tired of the nightlife one day and asked Thor if he didn't want to take over the event. From 1993 Thor ran Heaven , first with Walter Häusler and later alone.

For a long time the U4 was the location of Heaven . After a fire there, it made a guest appearance in the arena for a while around 1992 . After the second fire in the U4 and after its official closure due to non-compliance in 2005, it made a guest appearance in the Volksgarten disco. After differences with the management there, in 2006 we went on a hike through different locations with less frequency and on various days of the week, temporarily making a guest appearance again in the newly opened U4 with Behave! and finally ended up in March 2007 on Saturdays, the best day to go out, in the venerable, but spruced-up Camera Club . In 1992 the rose ball , the alternative to the Vienna Opera Ball , took place for the first time as part of Heaven . Since the beginning of the Life Ball , the team has also hosted the largest ball disco there in the Arkadenhof every year. As an experiment, a double CD was released in 2001 in collaboration with a large record company. On the occasion of the release, Heaven went on tour in almost all of Austria (excluding Carinthia). Holger Thor is present at other events with the creative team from Heaven and as Miss Candy .

In addition to the resident DJ team, prominent guest DJs from Germany and abroad provide musical entertainment. Guests have already welcomed Jean-Paul Gaultier , Grace Jones , Boy George , Right Said Fred , Marcus Schenkenberg and others.

At the beginning the club was a “gay only” underground event as Heaven Gay Night Vienna and in between for a while “gay and lesbian only”. After a few years it opened its doors to all “gay friends” and became more queer , which is also reflected in the name change to Heaven Vienna . Many people there have lost their fear of contact with gays. For others it was a low-threshold entry aid for people with coming-out problems, which was noted in the city magazine " Falter " in 1994 .
