Rosenball (Vienna)
The Rose Ball is an annual event in Vienna that runs parallel to the traditional Vienna Opera Ball with house and disco music instead of the waltz music that is otherwise common at balls . It sees itself both as a kind of parody (without, however, foregoing typical program items such as debutants and opening polonaise ) and as an homage to Austrian ball culture. It is also traded in the media as an alternative - or supplement - to the Opera Ball. Every year visitors to the state-sponsored opera ball hike to the “freaky” rose ball at a later hour.
Since 1992, the Rose Ball - like the Opera Ball - has been held on the Thursday before Shrove Sunday. Like the Life Ball , it has its roots in the gay scene. Until 2005 it took place in the course of Miss Candy ( Holger Thor ) 's weekly " Heaven Gay Night " in Club U4 , which also opened parts of the restaurant that were otherwise not open to the public. After its temporary closure, the 15th rose ball took place in 2006 in the Volksgarten disco, and the 16th in 2007 in the Auersperg Palace.
Since 2006 (until at least 2008) the city television broadcaster Puls TV and its successor, Puls 4, broadcast live for several hours from the event. Glamorous costumes or evening wear are desirable as cloakrooms. Introductory words and the opening words “Alles Walzer” come again and again from another famous personality either live, via direct connection or via video message. In 2004 by Heinz Fischer , then President of the Austrian National Council .
Due to the failure of several private sponsors, there will be no rose ball in 2020.
