Eduard Freiherr von Sacken

Eduard Freiherr von Sacken (born March 3, 1825 in Vienna , Austrian Empire ; † February 20, 1883 ibid, Austria-Hungary ) was an Austrian archaeologist and art historian .

origin

His parents were Hofrat Freiherr Joseph von Sacken (7 May 1782 - 26 April 1853) and his wife Caroline von Würth (8 August 1897 - 19 May 1877). Field Marshal Lieutenant Adolf von Sacken (1830–1900) was his brother.

Life

Eduard von Sacken studied philosophy in Vienna and received his doctorate in philosophy on April 29, 1845. On June 1, 1845, he entered the Imperial and Royal Coin and Antiquities Cabinet as Amanuensis (secretary of a scholar). When a fire broke out in Vienna's castle on October 31, 1848, he helped save it. In recognition of his achievements, he received a diamond ring and a decree of praise from the emperor. From 1849 to 1852 he was responsible for the reorganization and installation of the kk Ambras collection and published a detailed description of the same. For this he received the gold medal for art and science in 1855.

In 1851 he completed his habilitation as a private lecturer in art archeology of the Middle Ages at the University of Vienna and in 1854 he became custodian of the kk Münz- und Antikenkabinet furthermore he was conservator of the architectural monuments in the district under the Viennese forest of Lower Austria, he also became a member of the learned committee of Germanic Museum elected. In 1857/1858 he was Dean of the Philosophical Doctors College and in the same year was awarded the cipher ring by Kaiser for the dedication of his work: "The Armaments and Weapons of the Ambras Collection".

In 1861 he was appointed third and in 1863 second curator at the Münz- und Antikenkabinet; 1864 permanent member of the kk Central Commission for Research and Conservation of Architectural Monuments ; 1865 to the academic council of the Imperial and Royal Academy of Fine Arts; 1868 for the first custodian with the title of Vice Director. In 1871 he was appointed director of this museum, and in 1873 he was given the title and character of a government councilor.

He received numerous medals for his work: December 1863, however, the Knight's Cross of the Order of the French Legion of Honor , 1867 the Knight's Cross of the Franz Joseph Order , and in 1871 the Order of the Iron Crown 3rd Class .

His strength initially lay in the publication of art history publications. He later wrote his very scientific work on heraldry . It was an overview of the specialty and is still sufficient today for the scientific status of heraldic research. He was also a member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences .

He married Elisabeth Pollak-Höger on September 12, 1855 (June 12, 1835 - March 3, 1869). The couple had several children:
