You and no other (Original title: Dream Wife ) is the title of a romantic comedy film from 1953 . It is the first film in which Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr star together. It was shot in black and white, on loan from MGM .

action

Clemsen Read is a very successful businessman and is engaged to Priscilla "Effie" Effington.

Clem is a macho who prefers to see his wife at home, busy with the three "Ks": kitchen, sweeping, having children. Effie, on the other hand, does not correspond to his ideal at all, she is an emancipated woman, an oil manager in the State Department by profession.

Clem is on a business trip through the Middle East to Bukistan (a fantasy state), where he wants to sell an irrigation system. There he meets Prime Minister Khan, who would give him his daughter Tarji as a wife. She is so right to his taste. He learned that she was brought up to obey and please her husband, so from his point of view a dream wife . With a heavy heart, Clem renounces: he is still in a relationship with Effie.

After returning home, Clem wants to set the wedding date. But Effie's head isn't about to get married right now. There is an impending oil crisis, their efforts are needed, and marriage is out of the question for the time being.

Clem then breaks off the engagement and turns back to Tarji. He invites her to America and proposes marriage to her. But the private ties become a political matter. The US is sourcing oil from Bukistan and does not want to call relations into question through any mistake reads.

Clem is to be provided with a consultant who ensures compliance with the strict Bukistani laws regarding physical contact. And the choice falls on Effie, of all people, who soon turns out to be a spoilsport. However, she met open ears with Tarji when she told her about the modern American woman - independently and freely. Because Tarji only came to America to be able to live like that and not to be under her father's thumb.

Clem sees his skins swim away, but also realizes that he has to change his attitude towards women, and Effie is actually a dream woman after all.

background

At the beginning of the 1950s, the easy Grant comedies seemed like Darling, I'm getting younger , you don't kiss leopards and you and no one else can no longer find their audience. Realistic dramas ( Endstation Sehnsucht , African Queen ) were considered a new trend . The contemporary reviews are also to be seen under this aspect.

Reviews

The film didn't get good reviews when it came out.

  • The Hollywood Reporter found the end result fell far short of what was expected for the film.
  • Newsweek, on the other hand, spoke of an unequal mix of elegant humor and outright slapstick moments, just a bit more than a moderately amusing comedy.
  • However, the critics agreed on one thing: The acting performance of the two main actors left nothing to be desired.

Oscar nomination

Helen Rose and Herschel McCoy were nominated in the " Best Costume Design " category, but did not get it in 1954.
