action

Tracy Lord and her family are high society and live on a large estate. She is about to get married a second time. However, her anticipation and the wedding preparations are clouded by some unpleasant circumstances for her: Her ex-husband Dexter, a pop composer, has returned to his house, which is right next to that of the Lords, for the Newport Jazz Festival . Her father also hangs out with a young New York dancer and neglects his family. In order for the tabloid magazine Scouts not to publish spicy photos of the short relationship, Tracy has to allow a team of reporters - Mike Connor and Liz Imbrie - to cover their wedding celebrations. Tracy feels morally superior to all these people and makes fun of them when the two reporters arrive.

But the day before the wedding, Dexter brings back the memory of their first true love, her father appears and a little romance ensues with the reporter Mike. For the fiancé George this means a breach of trust. Only after some thought does he agree to hold the wedding anyway. But Tracy realizes that he is the wrong man for her: She is still in love with Dexter, whom she is now marrying a second time in front of the already assembled guests. Mike and Liz also find each other.

background

Louis Armstrong and Grace Kelly on the film set, 1956

Charles Walters ' genre piece differs from the original mainly in the music of Cole Porter and the additional scenes added for it. A major deviation from the first film version is the now heavily cut role of the bride's little sister. The plot was also moved from Philadelphia to the port town of Newport in Rhode Island in order to give the screenwriter John Patrick the opportunity to have Louis Armstrong and his band perform through the association with the Newport Jazz Festival, which was founded in 1954 . The Top Ten Thousand was the last Grace Kelly film before this 1956 Prince Rainier III. of Monaco married and ended her acting career.

The cinema release in the Federal Republic of Germany was on April 16, 1957, on German television the film was first shown on July 29, 1971 at 8:15 p.m. on ZDF .

criticism

Although The Top Ten Thousand is often rated weaker than the original film The Night Before the Wedding , it still received mostly positive reviews. On the US critic portal Rotten Tomatoes , 13 of the 16 reviews are positive, giving the film a rating of 81%.

“A perfectly staged musical with parodic features; very entertaining thanks to witty dialogues and snappy music. "

“The film is the musical remake of George Cukor's The Night Before the Wedding (1940) starring Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant . Even in this case, the older film is the better one, but this typical music fun from the 1950s with lots of singing and good music (Armstrong's title song "High Society", for example) is still very nice to look at. "

Awards

The film received two Academy Award nominations for "Best Music" and "Best Song" (Cole Porter for True Love ).
