Charles Walters

Charles Walters (born November 17, 1911 in Brooklyn , New York , † August 13, 1982 in Malibu , California ) was an American film director and choreographer . His specialty were dance films and musicals .

Life

Charles Walters began his professional career as a dancer on Broadway before landing a minor supporting role in Seven Days Leave with Lucille Ball and Victor Mature in 1942 . He then worked at MGM as a choreographer for film musicals such as Meet Me in St. Louis (1944) by Vincente Minnelli and Ziegfeld Follies (1946). In the latter he was already part of the directing staff. His first directorial work was Good News from 1947 with Peter Lawford and June Allyson .

In 1948 he directed Vincente Minnelli for Easter Walk with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire . In the next few years he was both director and choreographer of a number of other film musicals, including Lili (1953) with Leslie Caron and Mel Ferrer . For this film, he received his only Oscar nomination for Best Director . Walters tried his hand at other genres as well as film musicals. In 1953 he directed in Herzen im Fever , in which he can also be seen in one scene as the clumsy dance partner of Joan Crawford . He also shot the adventure comedy Don't Go Near the Water with Glenn Ford in 1957 and in 1960 championship in fling with Doris Day and David Niven . In 1966, he moved from MGM to Columbia Pictures and was the last director of Not So Fast, My Boy , a movie that also marked the last appearance of Cary Grant in Hollywood . After that, Walters worked for television, a. a. for series with Lucille Ball before he died of lung cancer in 1982 at the age of 70 .
