Use in film

Framework story

Grace Kelly and Bing Crosby play a divorced couple in the storyline, who meet again shortly before Kelly's role is remarried. As a wedding present, Crosby gives her a model boat called "True Love", which is a replica of the sailboat on which the two spent their honeymoon . In a flashback , the then newly wed couple is shown on the boat. As night falls, they sing the duet and thus underline their love for one another.

content

The lyrics are very short and often repeated. After a singular introduction that describes the couple's situation, it is emphasized again and again that the singers give each other "true love" and look after each other, which is why their guardian angel has nothing to do.

success

Kelly's part in the recording is relatively small: she only sings the second voice on the last repetition of the chorus . Nevertheless, she is officially listed as an interpreter and thanks to the song she was able to book a gold record for herself. For Crosby it was already the 21st award-winning single.

Truelove was for the 1957 film award Oscar in the category Best Song nomination. At the award ceremony , however, Doris Day's hit Que Sera, Sera from the film The Man Who Knew Too Much, won .

Versions

A popular Jane Powell recording was released around the same time as the original. Other performers who were successful with True Love are Elvis Presley (1957), Richard Chamberlain (1963), Roy Black , George Harrison (1976), Freddy Quinn (1972) and Shakin 'Stevens (1988). Elton John recorded the song again in 1993 as a duet with Kiki Dee .
