The 2016/17 Hong Kong Premier League was the third season of the top Hong Kong football league since it was founded in 2014 and the 105th competition for the Hong Kong National Championship. The season began on August 26, 2016 and ended on May 6, 2017. The defending champion was the Eastern AA .
mode
The clubs played a double round tournament , which resulted in a total of 20 games per team. Due to the odd number of teams, one team paused per game day. The game was played according to the 3-point rule (three points per win, one point per tie). The table was determined according to the following criteria:
- Number of points scored
- Number of points scored in direct comparison
- Goal difference in direct comparison
- Number of goals in direct comparison
- Goal difference from all games
- Number of goals in all games
At the end of the season, the second and third best teams qualified for the play-off round together with the winners of the Hong Kong Senior Challenge Shield and the Hong Kong FA Cup . Since two clubs qualified in several ways, the following unqualified teams took over the two free places in the league table. The matches in the semifinals were drawn.
The team with the highest points in the regular season qualified for the group stage of the AFC Champions League 2018 . The winner of the play-off round qualified for the second qualifying round of the Champions League. The club with the fewest points was relegated to the second-rate Hong Kong First Division League .
Attendees
The Tai Po FC returned after one year of abstinence as the master of Hong Kong First Division League 2015/16 back to the Hong Kong Premier League. The second promoted, Hong Kong FC , last played in the 2010/11 season in the top Hong Kong league. In addition to the two promoters, Hong Kong Sapling was re-established after the dissolution in 2012 and the Chinese first division team Guangzhou R&F sent a team that consists largely of its own U-19 players.
The two newcomers replaced on the one hand the last-placed club of the 2015/16 season , Wong Tai Sin DRSC , and on the other hand Dreams Metro Gallery FC , which withdrew from the league due to financial problems. Wong Tai Sin had to return to the Hong Kong First Division League after two years in the Hong Kong Premier League. For Dreams Metro Gallery FC, relegation meant the end of its eight-year membership in the Hong Kong upper house.
