Aberdeen ( Chinese  香港仔 , Pinyin Xiānggǎngzǎi , Jyutping Hoeng 1 gong 2 zai 2  - "small fragrant harbor") is a Hong Kong district on the south side of Hong Kong Iceland , located in the Southern District in Hong Kong . The port of Aberdeen ( 香港 仔 海港 , Xiānggǎngzǎi Hǎigǎng , Jyutping Hoeng 1 gong 2 zai 2 Hoi 2 gong 2 , English Aberdeen Harbor ) is nowadays used almost exclusively as a shelter for typhoon storms , also called “typhoon protection basin” ( 香港 仔 避風塘  /  香港仔 避风塘 , Xiānggǎngzǎi Bìfēngtáng , Jyutping Hoeng 1 gong 2 zai 2 At 6 fung 1 tong 4 , English Aberdeen Typhoon Shelters ) used.

Aberdeen Harbor has traditionally been a fishing port where many tankas and hoklos made their living in Hong Kong. Even today, the port is known for the junks and sampans on the waterfront. The Jumbo Kingdom , two floating restaurants in Aberdeen Harbor that can only be reached by ferry, is another tourist attraction of the district.

Across from Aberdeen Harbor is Ap Lei Chau Island . The strait forms the Aberdeen Channel ( 香港 仔 海峽  /  香港 仔 海峡 , Xiānggǎngzǎi Hǎixiá , Jyutping Hoeng 1 gong 2 zai 2 Hoi 2 haap 6 ), which is used as a shelter for boats during storms and typhoons. For added protection of the channel are in the west and southeast Molen piled up.

Today around 20,000 people live in the center of Aberdeen. Together with the neighboring districts of Tin Wan ( 田灣  /  田湾 , Tián Wān , Jyutping Tin 4 Waan 1 ), Shek Yue ( 石 漁  /  石 渔 , Shíyú , Jyutping Sek 6 jyu 4 ) and Wong Chuk Hang ( 黃竹坑  /  黄竹坑 , Huángzhúkēng , Jyutping Wong 4 zuk 1 haang 1 ) about 72,236 people live in the area. (As of 2016)

Aberdeen was named in 1845 after the British Secretary of State for War and Colonies, George Hamilton-Gordon, 4th Earl of Aberdeen . The Chinese name for Aberdeen , " 香港 仔 ", is derived from the name Hong Kong and is also often transcribed as " Heung Kong Tsai ".
