Ap Lei Chau ( Chinese  鴨 脷 洲  /  鸭 脷 洲 , Pinyin Yālì Zhōu , Jyutping Aap 3 lei 6 Zau 1  - "Duck's Tongue Island"), or Aberdeen Island , is an island in Hong Kong and is located in front of the town of Aberdeen in the southwest of Hong Kong Island . It has an area of 1.32 km² and is part of the Southern District . The Aberdeen Channel and Aberdeen Harbor are located between Aberdeen and Ap Lei Chau .

history

Ap Lei Chau served as an excellent refuge from typhoons and was a fishing village before the First Opium War . As a result of the Treaty of Nanking , the island and Hong Kong Island were ceded to the British in 1841. Since then, the island has received little attention.

In 1968, the government began building a power plant on the island that would provide electricity to all of Hong Kong Island. In 1980 a bridge was built that connected Ap Lei Chau with Hong Kong Island and thus gave the island an impetus for rapid economic development. Since the end of 2016, the island has been connected to Admiralty via the subway .

geography

Ap Lei Chau was named after the shape of the island, which looks like a duck's tongue. In Cantonese , ap means duck, lei tongue and chau island, more precisely "island on the river". The northern part has the higher population, the south is less densely populated.

The highest point on the island is the Yuk Kwai Shan ( 玉桂 山 , Yùguì Shān , Jyutping Juk 6 gwai 3 Saan 1  - "Cinnamon Mountain"), also called Mount Johnston , with a height of 196 meters.

Ap Lei Chau also gives its name to a geological formation that covers most of Hong Kong Island.

With 61,900 inhabitants / km², Ap Lei Chau is the island with the second highest population density worldwide, after Santa Cruz del Islote , and before Malé (island) , the main island of the Maldives .
