The island is part of the North Malé Atoll . Its land area of ​​about 1.952 km² is almost completely built up, with the exception of parks such as the central Sultan Park or Lonuziyaaraikolhu in the southeast.

The island of Malé is populated by 92,555 inhabitants on 195.2 hectares. With 47,416 inhabitants per square kilometer, it has the third highest population density , which is only surpassed by the tiny Santa Cruz del Islote ( Colombia ) and the Hong Kong island of Ap Lei Chau .
