Dhoonidhoo ( Dhivehi ދޫނިދޫ, rarely Dunidu ), known as Dhoonidhoo Prison Island , is an island in the Maldives in the North Malé Atoll that is used as a prison island .
The approximately 230 × 300 meter large island is about 2 kilometers north of the capital island Malé . The next neighboring islands, each about 1200 to 1300 meters away, are the airport island of Hulhulé , the Funadhoo , which is used as a fuel store, and the submarine reef Bentofessinat .
Until 1964, the island served as the seat of British colonial officials. After independence, the island came into the possession of the president, but his private residence was moved to the neighboring island of Aarah . Dhoonidhoo was probably converted into a prison under President Nasir ; During the rule of his autocratic successor Maumoon Gayoom (1978 to 2008), the island, together with the prison on Maafushi, became notorious as an internment camp ( Dhoonidhoo detention center ) for political prisoners . According to information from human rights organizations, there was systematic torture there; at least one person (Muaviath Mahmood 2005) died there under unexplained circumstances. The closure of the prison has been discussed since the democratization of the Maldives in 2008.
