Maafushi ( Dhivehi މާފުށި) is one of the inhabited islands of the South Malé Atoll and is best known for the state prison at the southern end of the island. Maafushi is about 27 kilometers south of the capital Malé and is home to around 2500 locals with Muslim beliefs on an area of around 1270 × 265 meters.

The island was destroyed in the tsunami of December 26, 2004 and then rebuilt. The island's population now lives mainly from tourism and fishing .

tourism

The change of the island, which lived mainly from fishing, to a tourism island began in 2009 when the government of the Maldives liberalized the tourism sector. In 2010 the first guest house was built. In 2018 Maafushi is home to around 60 guest houses and hotels. In 2017, the beach section at the northwestern end of the island was expanded for tourism. At the "Bikini Beach", tourists are allowed to wear bikini and swim shorts.

Due to the ferry connection to the main island of Malé , Maafushi is popular with individual tourists. The ferry runs once a day, with the exception of Friday, between the main island and Maafushi. A single trip costs the equivalent of 1 euro.
