The Iraqi Premier League 2016/17 was the 43rd season of the highest Iraqi football league since it was founded in 1974. The season began on September 15, 2016 and ended on August 10, 2017. The defending champions were al-Zawraa SC .
mode
The clubs played a double round tournament , which resulted in a total of 38 games (due to the withdrawal of Erbil SC only 36 were played) per team. This represented a change from the previous season, which was initially held in two groups of ten teams each with a subsequent final round. The game was played according to the 3-point rule (three points per win, one point per tie). The table was determined according to the following criteria:
- Number of points scored
- Goal difference from all games
- Number of goals in all games
At the end of the season, the team with the highest points should qualify for the group stage of the AFC Champions League 2018 . In addition, the winner of the Iraq FA Cup would have taken part in the second qualifying round of the Champions League. But since neither received a license for the Champions League, both started instead in the group stage of the AFC Cup 2018 . The two clubs with the fewest points were relegated to the second-rate Iraq Division One .
Attendees
The al-Hussein SC managed a masterpiece of the final round of Iraq Division One 2015/16 for the first time in their history the rise in the Iraqi Premier League. The second climber, al-Bahri SC , last played in the 1990/91 season in the highest Iraqi league, when the club was disbanded in the middle of the season.
The two promoted teams replaced the two last-placed clubs in the 2015/16 season , Duhok SC , which withdrew from the league in the middle of the season, and al-Sinaa SC . The Al-Sinaa SC had to return to Iraq Division One after only one year in the Iraqi Premier League. For Duhok SC, relegation meant the end of his 18-year membership in the Iraqi upper house of football.
