The Franso Hariri Stadium ( Kurdish یاریگای فرانسۆ حەریری; Arabic ملعب فرانسو حريري) is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Iraqi city of Erbil , Kurdistan Region . The facility was completed in 1956 and renovated in 1992. It is the home ground of the Erbil SC football club .
The stadium offers seating and standing space for 40,000 spectators. It is the second largest stadium in Iraq after the Al-Shaab stadium in Baghdad .
Franso Hariri , a former Assyrian politician and high-ranking member of the Kurdish KDP , was murdered on February 18, 2001 on his way to work by four members of the radical Ansar al-Islam . In memory, the stadium was named after him.
On July 10, 2009, the Iraqi national football team's first international match since the Iraq war took place in the Franso Hariri Stadium and ended with a 3-0 win for the home team over Palestine . On July 15, 2009, the Asian Football Association announced that Iraqi teams and clubs will be allowed to host international matches in this stadium in the future.
The Franso Hariri Stadium is also the home stadium of the Kurdish soccer team . In June 2012 the final of the Viva World Cup between the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and lKurdistan took place in the Franso Hariri Stadium. The game ended 2-1 for the hosts. It was the first victory of the Viva World Cup for Kurdistan.
