Franso Hariri

Franso Hariri (* 1937 in Harir ; † February 18, 2001 in Hewlêr ) was an Assyrian politician and a high-ranking member of the Kurdish Democratic Party (KDP).

Life

Franso Hariri was born in 1937 in the town of Harir, 70 km from Hewlêr. In 1960 he finished his teacher training in Hewlêr. He started working for the KDP in the early 1960s. Hariri was close to Mustafa Barzani and was elected to the KDP Central Committee in 1979. In his political career he held several important positions within the party and the regional government in Northern Iraq . He was the leader of the KDP, Governor of the government Arbil and ministers.

He participated in many projects to modernize and beautify the city of Hewlêr. He was also a great sponsor of education, health and sports projects.

Hariri was murdered on February 18, 2001 while on his way to work by four members of the radical Ansar al-Islam . In 1994 and 1997 assassinations were carried out at the same site , but Hariri was able to escape.

In his honor, the football stadium in Hewlêr was renamed the Franso Hariri Stadium .
