The Kurdish football selection is not recognized by the international football associations AFC and FIFA . The Kurdish soccer team is the official national soccer team of the Kurdistan Autonomous Region . Since Kurdistan is not a member of the AFC or FIFA, it cannot take part in the Asian and World Cups. Alternatively, the CONIFA organization can take part in international tournaments .

history

At the Viva World Cup 2008 in Sweden, an alternative event to the official World Cup, the team reached 4th place after a 3-1 defeat in the game for 3rd place against Sápmi . The Kurds celebrated their first and only victory in this tournament against Provence .

In December 2008, during the 5th General Assembly, Kurdistan was granted full membership in the NF Board . In 2011 the Autonomous Region of Kurdistan hosted the Viva World Cup .

At the Viva World Cup 2009 in Italy, the Kurdish soccer team came second in the tournament. In the semifinals, the Kurds defeated Provence 6-0 and in the final they lost 2-0 to Padania .

At the Viva World Cup 2010 in Malta, the Kurdish soccer team came second in the tournament. In the semifinals the Kurds defeated Occitania 2-1 and in the final they lost 0-1 to Padania.

In 2012 they finally won the tournament for the first time by beating the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus 2-1 in the final.

The Confederation of Independent Football Associations (CONIFA) was founded in 2013 and has been organizing a World Cup every two years for states, minorities, stateless peoples and regions that are not members of FIFA . In the respective CONIFA world football championships, the Kurdish football team has so far qualified for the CONIFA world football championship 2014 in Sápmi (Sweden) and for the CONIFA world football championship 2016 in Abkhazia (Georgia). While in the previous tournament "VIVI World Cup" they were among the top 4 every time, participation in this new tournament was less successful. In the 2014 CONIFA World Football Championship, Ellan Vannin was eliminated in the quarter-finals with a 1: 1 (4: 2 nE) and thus finished 6th. Two years later they were eliminated in the quarterfinals, this time against Padanien with a 2: 2 (6: 7 n.E.). The placement went even worse with a 9th place. The final placement will be determined in the so-called "placement round".

During the qualification for the CONIFA World Football Championship 2018 in London, the Kurdish football team could not earn enough points, which is why they were unable to qualify. This was the first time since 2008 that the Kurdish soccer team did not take part in an international tournament.

Official Kurdistan FA emblem

The emblem of the Kurdish Football Association was created by Kurdish artist Rawand Sirwan Nawroly ( Kurdish نهورڕۆڵی رهوه نهورڕۆڵی) designed. The emblem represents the colors of the Kurdish flag , with the red representing the Newroz fire. The yellow ball represents the sun and the green banner represents the green landscape.
