The Tamil Football Association TEFA was founded on April 8, 2012 by the Global Tamil Youth League (T-League), which also includes the youth club TYO . In 2012, TEFA took part in the VIVA World Cup in Kurdistan with their national team for the first time in history and secured seventh place. The team consists of players from the Tamil diaspora, which number almost a million. Players from Canada, England and Switzerland were selected for the Viva World Cup.

According to the Roon Ba Ranking, Tamil Eelam is currently 53rd among the non-FIFA football nations.
