The UAE Arabian Gulf League 2016/17 was the 43rd season of the United Arab Emirates' top football league since it was founded in 1973. The season started on September 16, 2016 and ended on May 13, 2017. The defending champion was al-Ahli Dubai .
mode
The clubs played a double round tournament , which resulted in a total of 26 games per team. The game was played according to the 3-point rule (three points per win, one point per tie). The table was determined according to the following criteria:
- Number of points scored
- Number of points scored in direct comparison
- Goal difference in direct comparison
- Number of away goals in direct comparison
- Goal difference from all games
- Number of goals in all games
At the end of the season, the two teams with the highest points and the winner of the UAE President's Cup qualified for the group stage of the AFC Champions League 2018 . The third-placed should start in the play-off round of the Champions League. But since this did not receive a license, the league advanced moved up. The two clubs with the fewest points were relegated to the second-rate First Division League .
Attendees
The Hatta Club returned after eight years of absence as a champion of First Division League 2015/16 back to the UAE Arabian Gulf League. The second promoted team, al-Ittihad Kalba SC , made it back to the top division of the United Arab Emirates after being relegated in 2015.
The two promoted teams replaced the last two clubs in the 2015/16 season , al-Fujairah SC and al-Shaab . Al-Shaab had to return to the First Division League after only one year and al-Fujairah SC after two years in the UAE Arabian Gulf League.
