Qatargas League 2016/17 ↓

The Qatar Stars League 2016/17 was the 43rd season of the highest Qatari football league since it was founded in 1963. The season began on September 15, 2016 and ended on April 15, 2017. The defending champion was al-Rayyan SC .

mode

The clubs played a double round tournament , which resulted in a total of 26 games per team. The game was played according to the 3-point rule (three points per win, one point per tie). The table was determined according to the following criteria:

1. Number of points scored
2. Goal difference from all games
3. Number of goals in all games

At the end of the season, the team with the highest points and the winner of the Emir of Qatar Cup qualified for the group stage of the AFC Champions League 2018 . The third and fourth placed should start in the second qualifying round of the Champions League. Since places became available in the access list for the Champions League, the league third moved into the group phase and the fifth started straight away in the play-off round .

The two clubs with the fewest points were relegated to the second-class Qatargas League , the 12th played in a relegation game against the 2nd of the Qatargas League 2016/17 for the relegation .

Attendees

The Muaither SC returned after two years of absence as a master of Qatargas League 2015/16 back to the Qatar Stars League. The second climber, al-Shahania SC , managed to return to the top class directly after being relegated in 2015.

The two promoted teams replace the two last-placed clubs in the 2015/16 season , Qatar SC and al-Mesaimeer SC . The al-Mesaimeer SC had to return to the Qatargas League after just one year in the Qatar Stars League. For the Qatar SC it was the first relegation from the Qatari upper house in the club's history.
