Al-Wakra ( Arabic الوكرة, DMG al-Wakra ) is a port city and capital of the al-Wakra community in Qatar on the Persian Gulf , 18 km south of Doha .

87,970 people live there (as of 2015). In the past, the port was mainly used as a fishing and pearl trading port. Ships ( dhows ) are still built by hand along the port facilities .

Al-Wakra offers a museum in the old fort , parts of the old city ​​wall , some old houses and two old mosques in the Wahhabism style.

The sports club Al-Wakrah SC is also based in al-Wakra .
