Central Schwyz meteorologists

The Innerschwyz Meteorologists (actually the Innerschwyz Meteorological Association , mainly known as the Muotathaler Wetterschmöcker ) are a group of hobby meteorologists from the Innerschwyz region in Central Switzerland .

history

On May 26, 1947, the Catholic Meteorological Association of Innerschwyz was founded in Ried in Muotathal . The members appeared under the name Muotathaler Wetterschmöcker , Central Schwyzer Meteorologists and Weather Prophets . One of the reasons for the formation of the association was the emergence of radio and television with the fear that the prophecy of the weather and the nature observation would be lost. The association started with 67 members and an annual contribution of 60 cents . In 2016 the association had more than 4,100 members. The annual contribution was 10 Swiss francs . The annual meeting is attended by around 900 people.

Twice a year, the “Wetterschmöcker” present their humorous weather forecasts at the public meetings of the Meteorological Association in Innerschwyz. The agriculturally oriented amateur meteorologists incorporate their observations in the great outdoors into their weather forecasts. The exact method remains a mystery to each of the prophets. The “weather king”, whose forecasts have come closest to the actual weather events in the past six months, will receive a wooden sculpture as a hiking bonus at the next club meeting.

Films and commercials

  • Christoph Felder : The weather prophets (German: Die Wetterpropheten ), documentary 2007, the film received awards at the CineEco Portugal 2008 and at the Matsalu Film Festival 2007.
  • In 2010, documentary filmmaker Thomas Horat made a 90-minute homage to the six Central Schwyz meteorologists with the film Wätterschmöcker . The weather forecasts and their emergence are brought closer to the audience by the Schwyzer weather prophets.
  • Martin Horat appeared in two Switzerland Tourism commercials in 2011 . While in the first spot he predicts a snowy winter, in the second spot he points out the forecast that has actually arrived.
