The al-Janoub Stadium , formerly al-Wakrah Stadium ( Arabic ملعب الوكرة Malʿab al-Wakra , DMG Malʿab al-Wakra ), is a football stadium with a closable roof in the Qatari port city of al-Wakra . The facility is planned as one of eight venues for the 2022 World Cup and is around 23  km from the center of the capital Doha . In addition to the lockable roof, the venue has a cooling system so that the stadiumcan be used all year round, despite the desert climate . The design by architect Zaha Hadid in collaboration with AECOM is to offer 40,000 seats. After the World Cup, the stadium is to bereduced to 20,000 seatsfor further use by al-Wakrah SC in the Qatar Stars League . The expanded seats are to be donated for football development projects overseas.

history

In December 2010, Qatar was awarded the contract for the 2022 World Cup. In May 2014, construction work on the World Cup stadium began with the groundbreaking ceremony . The opening took place on May 16, 2019. To mark the occasion, the finalists of the Emir of Qatar Cup , the national cup competition of Qatar, faced each other in the first official game . In the final, the al-Duhail SC met in front of 38,678 spectators on the al-Sadd SC and won 4-1. The al-Wakrah Stadium is the second venue for the 2022 World Cup, after the renovation of the Khalifa International Stadium , which was completed for the tournament.

Other facilities such as a. Two training fields cooled to 26  ° C , two  sports halls , four  tennis courts , two  basketball courts and other sporting areas are being built. In addition, include a school, a wedding hall, cycling and skiing trails, restaurants, retail stores on 10,000  sqm  area, gyms, riding and parks as well as a four star - hotel with 150 rooms to it. The construction costs should amount to 587.3 million  euros .
