Citizenship controversy
In January 2019, Abdulla and Qatar reached the final of the Asian Cup . Then the semi-final opponent, the United Arab Emirates , appealed against the valuation of the game, because Abdulla and Bassam Al-Rawi were not eligible to play. In order to be eligible to play for the national team, according to the FIFA statutes, either the player himself, a parent or a grandparent must be born in the country or the player must have lived in the country continuously for at least five years after reaching the age of 18. The latter did not apply to Abdulla, but he said his mother was born in Qatar, which the United Arab Emirates doubted.
