history

In 1980 Qatar took part in the U-19 Asian Cup for the first time. In the tournament, which was held in group mode, they achieved second place behind South Korea with only one defeat and thus qualified for the 1981 World Junior Championship . There Qatar finished second in the group with Poland , the USA and Uruguay and met Brazil in the quarter-finals . In an even game against the Seleção Sub-20 , Khalid Almuhannadi scored three goals, the goal for the 3-2 final score in the 87th minute. Then they defeated England 2-1 and moved into the final, in which they lost 4-0 to the German U-20s .

In the following years, the Qatari U-19 team failed to qualify for the U-20 World Cup at the Asian Championships. After they were eliminated in the semi-finals in 1986 , they lost to Iraq on penalties in the semifinals in 1988 and just barely missed qualifying as runner-up in the play-offs of Asia and Oceania. After another semi-final participation in 1990 , Qatar's U-19s did not get beyond the preliminary round at the Asian Championships until 2000 . As hosts, the Qatari U-20 team was able to take part in the Junior World Cup in 1995 , in which, after a draw with Russia, defeats against Brazil and Syria and thus the preliminary round followed.

In the Asian Cup, which is now held as a U-20 competition, the team was eliminated in the preliminary round in 2002 , before reaching the quarter-finals in 2004 as runners-up behind China , where they were eliminated 5-3 on penalties after a 0-0 win against Japan . At the Asian Championships in 2006 and 2008 , the Qatari U-20 team failed in qualifying. Since 2010, the Asian Cup has been played as a U-20 tournament again. After failing to qualify in 2010 , Qatar was fourth in the group behind Australia , Syria and Saudi Arabia in the preliminary round in 2012 . In 2014 , the Qatari U-19 national team became Asian champions by beating North Korea in the final . The U-20 team was qualified for the third time for the U-20 World Cup, in which they were eliminated in the preliminary round in 2015 as fourth in the group, without points behind Portugal , Colombia and Senegal .
