The 2016 U-19 Asian Football Championship (officially: AFC U-19 Championship 2016 ) was the 39th edition of the tournament and took place for the first time in Bahrain from October 13 to 30, 2016 . The tournament served as the Asian qualification for the 2017 U-20 World Cup in South Korea . The best four teams qualified for it.
Japan won the tournament on penalties 5-3 in the final against Saudi Arabia . The two had prevailed in the semi-finals against Vietnam and Iran . Defending champion Qatar was eliminated in the group stage. The top scorer was the two Saudi Arabians Sami Al-Najai and Abdulrahman Al-Yami, who each scored four goals.
Eligible were players born on or after January 1, 1997.

qualification
Of the 47 member associations of the AFC, 43 registered to take part. The group draw took place on June 5, 2015 in Kuala Lumpur . The teams were divided according to their geographical location into the western region, consisting of West, Central and South Asia, and the eastern region, consisting of Southeast and East Asia and Australia. The western region was composed of one group of five teams and five groups of four teams and the eastern region of two groups of five teams and two groups of four teams.
The games of the groups of four were played between October 2 and 6, 2015, those of the groups of five began on September 28, 2015. The ten group winners and the five best runners-up qualified alongside host Bahrain, which also took part in the qualification, for the finals.

The group draw took place on April 30, 2016 in the Bahraini capital Manama . The teams were divided into four different pots according to their placements at the last event in October 2014 and drawn into four different groups with four teams each. Host Bahrain was already set as the group head of group A.

Squad
Each team consisted of a maximum of 23 players, at least three of whom had to be goalkeepers . Eligible were players born on or after January 1, 1997.
Group stage
The group winners and runners-up qualified for the quarter-finals, while those placed third and fourth were eliminated from the competition. If two or more teams were tied, the placement was determined by the following criteria:
- Number of points in direct comparison
- Goal difference in direct comparison
- Number of goals in direct comparison
- If, after applying criteria 1 to 3, several teams still occupied the same place in the table, criteria 1 to 3 were reapplied, but only for the direct encounters between the teams in question. Should this also not lead to a definitive placement, criteria 5 to 9 were applied.
- Goal difference from all group matches
- Number of goals in all group matches
- If it had only been about two teams and these two were on the pitch, there would have been a penalty shoot-out between them .
- Lower number of points through yellow and red cards (yellow card 1 point, yellow-red and red card 3 points, yellow card followed by a direct red card 4 points)

Final round
The quarter- and semi-finals as well as the final were played in the knockout system . If the games in the final round were tied after the regular playing time of 90 minutes, there was an extension of 15 minutes twice and possibly (if there was still no winner) a penalty shoot-out .
