The 41st U-19 Asian Football Championship (officially: 2020 AFC U-19 Championship ) is expected to take place in Uzbekistan from October 14 to 31, 2020 . 16 teams will compete against each other first in the group stage in four groups and then in the knockout system . The defending champion is Saudi Arabia .

The tournament serves as Asian qualification for the U-20 soccer world championship in 2021 . The best four teams will qualify for it.

Of the 47 member associations of the AFC , 46 registered to participate. The group draw took place on May 9, 2019 in Kuala Lumpur . The teams were divided according to their geographical location into the western region, consisting of West , Central and South Asia , and the eastern region, consisting of Southeast and East Asia . The western region consisted of a group of five and five groups of four teams each and the eastern region of a group of five and four groups of four teams each.

The groups were held as mini-tournaments from October 2 to 6 (group C), from November 2 to 10, 2019 (groups B and D to K) and from November 22 to 30, 2019 (group A) each with one of the participants hosting a group. Each team played once against each other in their group. The eleven group winners and the five best runners-up qualified for the final round. The hosts from Uzbekistan also took part in qualifying but were automatically seeded for the finals.

South Korea was able to qualify for the final round for the 39th time and remains a record participant. Close behind is neighbor Japan with 38 as well as Malaysia and Iran with 24 and 21 participations respectively . For Bahrain , Iran, Yemen and host Uzbekistan it is the first participation since 2016 , for Laos the first after 2004 and for Cambodia the first after 1974 . On the other hand, with China , Chinese Taipei , Jordan , North Korea , Thailand and the United Arab Emirates, six participants from 2018 did not qualify.

The group draw took place on June 18, 2020 in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur . The teams were divided into four pots according to their placements at the last event in October 2018 and drawn into four groups of four teams each. Host Uzbekistan was already set as the group head of group A.

  • Lottery pot 3 : Malaysia, Iraq, Vietnam, Cambodia

Venues of the U-19 Asian Cup 2020

When the exact match schedule was announced in June 2020, the AFC named the four stadiums in the three cities of Namangan , Olmaliq and Tashkent as venues, all of which are in eastern Uzbekistan . In Bunyodkor stage both the opening also takes place as the final.

Two of the four stadiums have a capacity between 10,000 and 25,000 spectators. The largest planned stadium is the Milliy Stadium with a capacity of 34,000 spectators, while the smallest stadium, the Lokomotiv Stadium , only offers space for 8,000 spectators.

Group stage

The group winners and runners-up qualify for the quarter-finals, the third and fourth-placed finishers are eliminated from the competition. If two or more teams are tied, the placement is determined by the following criteria:

  1. Number of points in direct comparison
  2. Goal difference in direct comparison
  3. Number of goals in direct comparison
  4. If, after applying criteria 1 to 3, there are still several teams in the same place in the table, criteria 1 to 3 are reapplied, but only to the matches between the teams in question. If this does not result in a definitive placement either, criteria 5 to 9 will be applied.
  5. Goal difference from all group matches
  6. Number of goals in all group matches
  7. If it is only about two teams and these two are on the field, there will be a penalty shoot-out between them .
  8. Lower number of points through yellow and red cards (yellow card 1 point, yellow-red and red card 3 points, yellow card followed by a direct red card 4 points)

Final round

The quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final are played in the knockout system . If the games in the final round are tied after the regular playing time of 90 minutes, there will be two extra times of 15 minutes and possibly (if there is still no winner) a penalty shoot-out .
