The 21st U-19 Asian Football Championship was held in Bangkok ( Thailand ) in 1980 . The tournament began on February 21st and ended on March 1st, 1981. The winner was South Korea . The tournament winner qualified for the 1981 World Junior Championship .

The registered teams identified the five participants in two groups. The host was selected from this group.

The five teams played a single round . There were two points for a win and one point for a draw.

course

Host Thailand and defending champions South Korea start the tournament with high wins. On matchday two, Thailand lost to Qatar, while South Korea took their second victory against Japan. Even after the third match day, when the South Koreans had no play, the defending champions stayed ahead, as Thailand also lost to Japan and Qatar only got a goalless draw against Bangladesh. South Korea's first setback followed on matchday four with a 1-1 draw against Bangladesh and Qatar leveled on points with a 1-0 win against Japan. Qatar had no play on the final day of the match and South Korea took the last missing point in their 1-0 win against Thailand.

South Korea became Asian champions for the fifth time and qualified for the Junior World Championship in Australia in 1981 . There, South Korea finished the preliminary round in third behind Brazil and Romania and was eliminated.
