The 20th U-19 Asian Football Championship was held in 1978 in Dhaka ( Bangladesh ). The tournament started on October 5th and ended on October 28th . Iraq and South Korea were the winners , as the final had ended in a draw. Both finalists qualified for the 1979 World Junior Championship . Indonesia later moved up for Iraq.

Result
Iraq became Asian champions for the third time, and South Korea for the fourth time. Both qualified alongside hosts Japan for the 1979 World Junior Championship . Since Iraq and other nations decided not to participate, Indonesia moved up. In Japan, South Korea finished the preliminary round in third place behind Paraguay and Portugal . The Asian champions were eliminated as well as Indonesia as group bottom behind Argentina , Poland and Yugoslavia and Japan as fourth behind Spain , Algeria and Mexico .
