Mexican national soccer team (U-20 men)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Mexican national soccer team of the U-20 men is a selection team of the Federación Mexicana de Fútbol Asociación , which consists of Mexican soccer players of the appropriate age groups.

It was the first Mexican team to reach the final in a competition organized by FIFA . She succeeded straight away at the U-20 World Cup , which was held for the first time in 1977 , where a single win (6-0 in the opening match against hosts Tunisia) was enough to qualify for the final. After the semi-final against Brazil had not found a winner even after extra time, a penalty shoot-out was necessary, which the Mexicans decided 5-3 in their favor. The final against the Soviet Union also ended in a draw (2-2 after extra time) and required a time-consuming penalty shoot-out until the Mexicans were beaten 8: 9.

The other Mexican selection teams that had reached the final at a FIFA tournament were able to prevail: the first men's team in the Confederations Cup in 1999 against Brazil 4: 3 and twice the U-17 selection at the World Cups in 2005 and 2011 with 3 : 0 against Brazil and 2-0 against Uruguay.

Tunisia 1977 final 5 2 2 1 11: 05 A single 6-0 win in the opening match against hosts Tunisia was enough for the Mexicans to win three more draws (1-1 in the group matches against Spain and France and in the semi-finals against Brazil, which was won 5-3 on penalties ) to qualify for the finals. This was only lost on penalties, so that Mexico remained unbeaten in all five games of the tournament in regular time.

The negative for the hosts was that never before had a Mexican soccer team achieved such negative results in their own country and consequently finished last in the preliminary group and dropped out prematurely. Nevertheless, after the second game (1: 2 against South Korea in front of 71,198 spectators) the Mexicans still had a chance of progressing, but would have had to defeat the Scots in the last game. 86,582 spectators came to this game, who saw the hosts lose 1-0.
