The 11th FIFA Junior World Cup (officially: 9th World Youth Championship for the FIFA / Coca-Cola Cup ) was held in Malaysia from June 16 to July 5, 1997. The number of participating teams was increased from 16 to 24 for this tournament, with two further preliminary round groups and another knockout round being introduced with the round of 16 .
Defending champions Argentina were able to repeat their success with a 2-1 final victory over Uruguay and with their third title they equaled the previous record world champions Brazil. The Uruguayan Nicolás Olivera was chosen as the best player of the tournament, the top scorer was the Brazilian Adaílton with ten goals.
