The 13th U-17 World Cup took place in Nigeria from October 24 to November 15, 2009 . Soccer Youth World Champion (under 17 years), the Switzerland , who won all of their seven games and defeated the hosts and defending champions in the final. It is the first Swiss football -WM title at all.

On May 21, 2009, FIFA issued a “yellow card” to Nigeria. In nine possible venues, only the two stadiums of Abuja and Lagos were nearly completed. Since the tournament is to be played in at least six stadiums, the four stadiums in Calabar , Enugu , Ijebu-Ode and Kano were given a “grace period” of one month. If the situation in just one of these stadiums does not meet FIFA's expectations, the tournament would be relocated to another country.

Bauchi and Kaduna initially excluded FIFA as venues, but eventually matches were allowed to take place in the relatively large stadiums there. The candidate city of Warri was not considered as a venue due to armed conflict in the state of Delta .
