Lennart Thy [ ˈlenɑ: rd ˈti: ] (born February 25, 1992 in Frechen ) is a German football player . He is considered a dynamic and robust center forward , but can also be used in midfield and as a left-back. He is under contract with PEC Zwolle in the Netherlands and will move to Sparta Rotterdam within the league for the 2020/21 season . In addition, Thy is a former young German national player.
career
In the club
Thy was born in Frechen. He started playing soccer in his hometown with Viktoria Frechen. At this club, however, he only stayed a year and then moved north , where he played at FC, PSV and JFV. In 2007, he switched to the youth department of Werder Bremen , for which he was used in the U-17 and U-19 Bundesliga . When he was still part of the younger age group of the A-youth , he made his professional league debut a few days after his 18th birthday at the home game of the Werders reserve team against Holstein Kiel in the 3rd division . In the 6-1 win, he was substituted on for Dominik Schmidt in the 78th minute at a score of 5-1 and scored the last goal of the game himself.
On November 24, 2010 Thy made his first competitive game for the Bremen Bundesliga team in the 3-0 away defeat against Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League . In the further course of the season he came to two appearances in the Bundesliga.
Thy completed the preparation for the 2011/12 season with the Bremen professional team and despite competitors like Marko Arnautović was regularly called up as a striker in test matches, mostly alongside Markus Rosenberg . He was praised for his achievements by coach Thomas Schaaf . Schaaf saw an improvement especially in Thys exploitation of opportunities.
After good preparation, Thy was also used in competitive games at the beginning of the season when Claudio Pizarro was out due to an injury. As in the preparation, his strike partner Markus Rosenberg was. On the second day of the Bundesliga season, however, Thy was substituted in the 61st minute. Previously, he had missed a clear scoring opportunity. After that he played no role in the Bremen professional team. One reason for this should have been poorer performance in training, and Pizarro was ready to go again. Thomas Wolter , the coach of the Bremen U-23 team, explained that Thy was in a "phase in which nothing works" and that it is "nothing unusual" for a young player. However, he did not manage to play his way back into the team. In the further course of the season Thy only came on a short assignment. At the end of the season, the club offered him an extension of the expiring contract, which should be linked to a loan. However, he declined this offer. On May 3, 2012, SV Werder Bremen announced that Thy would leave the club.
For the 2012/13 season Thy moved to FC St. Pauli . On November 9, 2015, he scored all four goals in FC St. Pauli's 4-0 win in the second division game against Fortuna Düsseldorf . His contract ran until June 30, 2016.
Thy returned to Werder Bremen for the 2016/17 season . In January 2016, he received a contract that ran until June 30, 2019. On September 24, 2016, he scored his first Bundesliga goal in a 2-1 win over VfL Wolfsburg .
On January 1, 2017, Thy returned to FC St. Pauli on loan until the end of the season. After 15 missions in which he scored two hits, he left the club again.
At the beginning of the summer preparation 2017, Thy was deleted from the Bundesliga squad of Werder Bremen. On July 19, 2017, he switched to the Dutch first division promoted VVV-Venlo on loan until the end of the 2017/18 season . There he was used in 32 league games and scored seven goals.
Thy returned to Bremen at the beginning of July 2018 and was integrated into the training of the second team . After a few training sessions, he switched to the Turkish first division promoted Büyükşehir Belediye Erzurumspor on July 21, 2018 .
After a contract termination at the end of the year, he joined the Dutch first division club PEC Zwolle in January 2019 , where he received a contract with a term until June 30, 2020. At Zwolle Thy was a regular player and played 43 competitive games in which he scored 17 goals and three assists; At times he led the team as captain. Following the season 2019/20 , by virtue of COVID-19 pandemic had ended prematurely, the attacker signed in mid-May 2020 from the aftermath valid two-year contract with Premier League rivals Sparta Rotterdam .
In the national team
Thy debuted in the national jersey in 2008 in a friendly against Ireland in the U-16 team . Overall, he ran for this team four times, but remained without a goal. In the U-17 national team he then developed into a top performer and took part in the European and World Championships in 2009 . At the European Championship he won the title with his teammates and, together with the Dutchman Luc Castaignos, was the top scorer of the tournament with three goals. Among other things, he scored the 1-1 goal in the final. At the World Cup he also scored three times, but failed in the round of 16 against the eventual winner Switzerland 3: 4 after extra time. After the two tournaments, his time with the U-17 ended, for which he had scored 15 goals in 26 games and he moved up to the U-18 selection .

During his time at VVV-Venlo in March 2018, Thy donated blood as a registered stem cell donor to a person suffering from leukemia in order to enable therapy.
