The Best FIFA Football Awards
With The Best FIFA Football Awards , the world football association FIFA has been calling its annual gala since 2016 to honor the best players and coaches of the previous year. In a similar form, the FIFA World Player Gala took place between 1991 and 2009 and the FIFA Ballon d'Or Gala between 2010 and 2015 as predecessor events. The Best FIFA Football Awards took place in Zurich for the first time on January 9, 2017 , and the awards for the football year 2016 were given.
The new name The Best is intended as a link to football fans who, according to FIFA, like to refer to their favorite players and goals as “the best”. A total of eight awards will be given at the gala:
- The Best - FIFA World Player (since 1991)
- The Best - FIFA World Player (since 2001)
- The Best - FIFA Men's World Coach (since 2010)
- The Best - FIFA Women's World Coach (since 2010)
- The Best - FIFA World Goalkeeper (since 2017)
- FIFA Puskás Prize (since 2009)
- FIFA Fair Play Award (since 1987)
- FIFA Fan Award (since 2016)
- FIFA FIFPro World XI (since 2009)
Due to a changed voting process, fans can now also vote online for the winners of the player and coach awards; Together with around 200 media representatives worldwide, they make up 50% of the vote. The other half are traditionally the captains and coaches of all national teams, as was the case from 1991 to 2009 as a counterpoint to the media-based Ballon d'Or .
The Puskás Prize is chosen by users of FIFA.com from ten pre-selected goals, with the top 3 first being announced after the vote, as with the player and coach prizes. The winner of the fair play prize is determined by a jury of football experts. FIFA FIFPro World 11 is chosen by the international players' union FIFPro , or the football professionals it represents, from a selection of 55 nominees. A new feature is the FIFA Fan Prize , which is intended for fan groups and in which a panel of experts selects three special moments from the past year, which FIFA.com users then vote on.
