Warri is a city in the state of Delta in Nigeria with 546,576 inhabitants (2007). Warri and its seaport are located on the Warri River of the same name, a tributary of the Forcados River , which flows into the Gulf of Guinea , and is just under 50 km from the coast. The city of Warri is part of the Local Government Area (LGA) Warri-South .

ethnicities

The population is predominantly Ijaw , Itsekiri and Urhobo . According to the ethnic groups and clans, there are several “traditional rulers” in Warri. Ethnic conflicts are the order of the day.

Economy and Infrastructure

In addition to the seaport, there are other important economic sectors: crude oil production and shipping, shipbuilding , crude oil refining , petrochemicals and steel production in the Delta Steel Company (DSC). In particular, oil production and loading also cause losses and environmental damage. Conflicts in the Niger Delta are inevitable and can be seen, for example, in the movement for the emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND).

Nigerian Railway Corporation

The state-run Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) is to be privatized. The 329 km standard gauge line from iron ore mining in the National Iron Ore Mining Corporation (NIOMCO) in Itakpe in the state of Kogi via the Ajaokuta Steel Company (ASC) in Ajaokuta on the Niger to the Delta Steel Company (DSC) and the port of Warri are missing the last kilometers before Ajaokuta on the Warri – Ajaokuta route.

Airport

The new Warri Airport (also known as Osubi Airstrip ) has been in existence since 1999. It was financed by a consortium of oil companies and has flights to several national destinations.
