Yunus Malli (Turkish spelling Yunus Mallı ; born February 24, 1992 in Kassel ) is a German - Turkish soccer player . The offensive midfielder is under contract with VfL Wolfsburg and after 43 appearances for German junior teams plays for the Turkish national team .

family

Yunus Malli was born to Turkish parents in Kassel , Hesse ; he has a brother. In August 2008, Malli gave up his Turkish citizenship in order to take on German citizenship. In October 2015 he also took on his Turkish citizenship again in order to play for the Turkish Association .

Career

In the 2010/11 season Malli completed eleven regional league games for Borussia Mönchengladbach's second team, in which he scored two goals.

For the 2011/12 season he moved to Bundesliga club 1. FSV Mainz 05 . In six years he played 129 Bundesliga games for Mainz and scored 29 goals. He also played in the qualifying round for the 2014/15 UEFA Europa League and the group stage of the 2016/17 UEFA Europa League for FSV. In the Bundesliga season 2015/16 he was the top scorer of his team with eleven goals. Malli's contract ran until June 30, 2018.

In January 2017 he moved to league competitor VfL Wolfsburg , with whom he received a contract that ran until June 2021. Malli made his debut for the "Wolves" on January 21, 2017 (17th matchday) in a 1-0 home win against Hamburger SV . As a result, the midfielder was a regular in the 2017/18 season, played 37 compulsory games and was able to collect eleven scorer points. In 2018/19 , however, Malli was often only used as a substitute player and was able to qualify for the European Cup again after four years of abstinence with the club.

After only two appearances in the 2019/20 Europa League , in which he had reached the final round with Wolfsburg as second in the group, Malli was awarded to league competitor 1. FC Union Berlin at the start of the second half until the end of the season.

National team

Malli played for several German junior national teams. With the U17 national team he was European champion in 2009 and took part in the World Cup, which took place in the same year and where he was used twice. In 2015 he took part in the European Championship with the U21 national team and reached the semi-finals there , which were lost 5-0 to Portugal .

At the end of October 2015 he decided to play for the Turkish national team in the future . On November 13, 2015 Malli made his debut under coach Fatih Terim for this when he came on for Oğuzhan Özyakup in the 2-1 friendly win against Qatar in the second half .

At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was included in the Turkish squad . He was substituted on in Turkey's second game against Spain when the score was 3-0.
