Career

societies

youth

He played football for the first time at the age of five and joined a club in 1997. From 2000 to 2005 he played for Sporting Toulon until he finally moved to the youth department of AS Saint-Étienne at the age of 14 . Players like Grégory Coupet , Willy Sagnol or Bafétimbi Gomis had already emerged from the club's youth department .

Professional at AS St. Étienne

There he was introduced to the professional team for the first time in 2008 as an 18-year-old. In December 2008 he was first in the UEFA Cup in the extended squad, a few days later in the league. On January 3, 2009 he came under coach Alain Perrin to his competitive debut for the first team when he came on in the 89th minute for Bafétimbi Gomis in the 1-0 victory in the thirty-second final match for the Coupe de France at Girondins Bordeaux . Under Perrin he was neither in the further course of the French Cup competition nor in Ligue 1 and not in the UEFA Cup. Also in the first half of the following season Guilavogui was not used until Perrin was released on December 15, 2009. Christophe Galtier followed him . In the sixteenth-final match in the French cup competition at the fourth division club FC Villefranche , Guilavogui now played for his first competitive game in the 2009/10 season. On April 10, 2010 he made his debut in the first division and thus in professional football, when he came on in the 52nd minute for Mouhamadou Dabo in the 2-0 win on matchday 32 at FC Sochaux-Montbéliard . On May 15, 2010 he gave his first assist in the 1-1 draw at OGC Nice on the 38th and final matchday to equalize by Emmanuel Rivière .

In the following season he fought for a regular place and formed a duo with Blaise Matuidi . In the 2011/12 season, he made 32 league games and scored two goals. In the following season Saint-Étienne was fifth and qualified by winning the league cup for the European competition. Guilavogui, who did not miss a single league game in 2012/13, rose to a high performer in a team with players like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and contributed to the success of the club from the working-class city with three assists and two goals. Furthermore, at the end of the season he was elected Ligue 1's “Team of the Year”.

In the following season he came in Ligue 1 to two missions. In qualifying for the Europa League , the team was able to prevail against FC Milsami , but was then eliminated against Esbjerg fB .

Atlético Madrid

In the summer of 2013 he was transferred to Atlético Madrid in the Primera División shortly before the end of the transfer phase. There he signed a five-year contract. At Atlético he came on October 6, 2013 to his debut on matchday eight against Celta Vigo , when he came on in the 89th minute for Gabi . He made his European debut on November 6, 2013 in a 4-0 victory in the Champions League group game against FK Austria Wien in the starting line-up. Guilavogui later admitted that he had an offer "that was too good" and that he "couldn't refuse". According to his own statement, coach Diego Simeone “actually didn't need any more players” in Guilavogui's position and “the transfer to Madrid went very quickly.” At Atlético, Guilavogui could not prevail against Gabi, Tiago and Mario Suárez .

At the end of January 2014, Guilavogui returned to Saint-Étienne on loan until the end of the season, and only made seven appearances due to injury.

VfL Wolfsburg

During the summer break of 2014, he moved to VfL Wolfsburg in the German Bundesliga on loan for two years . On August 17, 2014, he made his competitive debut for VfL in the first round of the DFB Cup. On August 22, 2014 (1st matchday) he made his debut in the Bundesliga in the 1: 2 defeat in the away game against FC Bayern Munich . After a short time he became a regular player in defensive midfield alongside Luiz Gustavo . On November 6, 2014, he scored his first goal for Wolfsburg in the Europa League game in a 5-1 win against FK Krasnodar . He scored his first Bundesliga goal on April 11, 2015 (28th matchday) in a 2-0 win in the away game against Hamburger SV in the 10th minute. His first Bundesliga season ended with the runner-up and the DFB Cup victory.

In May 2016, Guilavogui was firmly committed and given a contract until June 30, 2019. This was extended to 2020 on August 31, 2017.

For the 2018/19 season , Guilavogui was appointed the new team captain of VfL Wolfsburg by coach Bruno Labbadia .

On the last day of the season, Guilavogui extended his contract with the Wolves early until 2023.
