The full- back comes from the successful talent factory of AS Saint-Étienne (in his time under Jacques Santini ), for which he played ten games in Division 1 in the 1995/96 season and then played in the second division for a year before joining in 1997 moved to AS Monaco and thus back to France's top division. For the Monegasque he made 71 first division appearances in three seasons and crowned his last season, 1999/2000, with the championship .

From July 1, 2000 Sagnol was under contract with Bundesliga club FC Bayern Munich , for whom he made his Bundesliga debut on August 12 (1st matchday) in a 4-1 win at home against Hertha BSC . His first of seven goals he scored with the connection goal in the 1: 2 defeat at FC St. Pauli in the following season on February 6, 2002 (21st matchday). With Bayern he won numerous national and international club titles. He had his greatest success with the club in 2001 when it won the Champions League and the World Cup . In the summer of 2004, Sagnol expressed thoughts of change and Arsenal FC showed interest. The Frenchman had publicly stated that he wanted to leave the club after the departure of Ottmar Hitzfeld . For this, the right-back received a fine. In the 2006/07 season he was mostly absent due to meniscus and cartilage damage . He suffered the injury in a Champions League game against AC Milan . He made his comeback with Munich in the UEFA Cup game at Sporting Braga in November 2007, when he came on at the last minute for his compatriot Franck Ribéry .

Towards the end of his time in Munich, Sagnol was noticed by criticizing the then Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld . He accused Hitzfeld of not getting enough missions and publicly criticized him. Hitzfeld then suspended him for the 2008 UEFA Cup semi-final against eventual winner Zenit St. Petersburg . In the 2008/09 season Sagnol suffered from persistent Achilles tendon complaints and was no longer used, which is why he ended his career on February 2, 2009. At the time of his retirement he was Bayern's longest-serving player and at times also wore the captain's armband .

National team

After five appearances at the U-20 World Cup in Malaysia, Sagnol made his debut on November 15, 2000 in Istanbul in the senior national team , which won the game 4-0. Sagnol was only used as a substitute in the first few years, as he had a strong, internationally experienced competitor in Lilian Thuram .

With the Equipe Tricolore , he won the Confederations Cup in 2001 (three games) and 2003 (two appearances, after a red card in the preliminary round in the final again).

Sagnol participated in the European Championship in 2004 and European Championship in 2008 and at the World Cup 2006 in Germany in part and denied there any games as a regular player.

He played his last international match on June 13, 2008 in Bern in the second group match of the European Championship in the 1: 4 defeat against the Netherlands . For the last group game against Italy he was not taken into account by coach Raymond Domenech . France was ultimately eliminated from the tournament as bottom of the group.

Life after the player career

In autumn 2009, Sagnol began a two-year training course as a general manager for sports at the Center de droit et d'économie du sport in Limoges . From 2009 to 2010 he worked as an expert for the French TV broadcaster Canal +, where he commented on and analyzed football matches. In January 2010, Sagnol was accepted into the board of directors of his former training association, AS Saint-Étienne . From March 2011, Sagnol worked as a scout for FC Bayern until the French football association FFF entrusted him with the newly created role of manager responsible for all French national teams at the Direction Technique Nationale (DTN) in November 2011 . In particular, he was responsible for communication between DTN and the senior national coach.

For the 2013/14 season , the FFF also appointed Sagnol chairman of the commission responsible for organizing the national cup competition . From June 2013 to May 2014 he coached the French U-21 national football team , his debut with the team was in a friendly against the German U-21 on August 13, 2013 in Freiburg.

For the 2014/15 season Sagnol was coach of Girondins Bordeaux . In November 2014, he hit the headlines for statements about African football players that were considered racist. On March 14, 2016, he was released from his coaching duties due to continued unsuccessfulness in Bordeaux.

In June 2017, FC Bayern Munich signed Sagnol to succeed Hermann Gerland as assistant coach under Carlo Ancelotti . He received a two-year contract with his former club. After the club split from Ancelotti on September 28, 2017, Sagnol took over the team as interim coach. After a game, a 2-2 at Hertha BSC , Jupp Heynckes was signed as the new head coach until the end of the season, assisted by Hermann Gerland and Peter Hermann . Sagnol then left the club.

Willy Sagnol is married and has four children. He is the cousin of the French TV presenter Alessandra Sublet , whose father Joël Sublet was a footballer for Olympique Marseille in the 1970s .
