Player career

Peter Hermann played a total of 120 Bundesliga games between 1973 and 1984 , two for Hamburger SV and 118 for Bayer 04 Leverkusen , in which he scored twelve goals. In the 1984/85 season he let his active career end with the Rhineland association league club VfL Hamm / Sieg .

At the age of 20, Hermann moved for the 1972/73 season from FV Engers from the Amateur League Rhineland to TuS Neuendorf in the then second -rate regional soccer league Southwest . The previous amateur footballer immediately belonged to Neuendorf's regular eleven with 29 appearances and four goals, which finished 11th at the end of the round. Hamburger SV signed the young player into the Bundesliga for the 1973/74 season after only one year of regional league football. Under coach Kuno Klötzer he was substituted in in August and September 1973 in two Bundesliga games against Wuppertaler SV (0: 3) and Hannover 96 (1: 4). On October 6th, 1973 Hermann stormed again for TuS Neuendorf in the Regionalliga Südwest; in the 2-1 win against Landau, he stormed the right wing. By the end of the round another 22 league appearances (1 goal) were added in the last year of the old second-rate regional league.

At the start of the 2nd Bundesliga , the light-footed and technically good midfielder was active at Alemannia Aachen for two years (1974 to 1976). After 69 second division games with seven goals, he signed a new contract with Bayer 04 Leverkusen for the 1976/77 season and joined the Werkself under coach Willibert Kremer . In the third year, 1978/79 , he won the championship in the 2nd Bundesliga North with Leverkusen and thus reached the Bundesliga. From 1976 to 1979 Hermann played 98 games with 20 goals in the 2nd Bundesliga for Leverkusen. He made his Bundesliga debut for Leverkusen on the fifth match day of the 1979/80 season, September 8, 1979, in a 3-0 defeat at Eintracht Frankfurt, where he came on in the second half for Hans-Jürgen Scheinert . He played his last Bundesliga game under coach Dettmar Cramer in the 1983/84 season. Hermann formed the midfield of Bayer 04 Leverkusen with Ulrich Bittorf , Thomas Hörster and Jürgen Röber in a 2-0 defeat at 1. FC Köln.

Coaching career

After Hermann had finished his playing career, he became in 1989 assistant coach of Juergen Gelsdorf 04 Leverkusen Bayer. After his release on May 31, 1991, Hermann took over the position of head coach for a month. He then assisted Dragoslav Stepanović and Erich Ribbeck before he was again interim coach from April 28 to June 30, 1996. He then moved back into the second tier and worked as an assistant to Christoph Daum , Berti Vogts , Klaus Toppmöller , Klaus Augenthaler and Michael Skibbe , among others . When Bruno Labbadia was signed as the new head coach for the 2008/09 season , he brought his assistant coach Eddy Sözer from Fürth with him, whereupon Hermann was to work as a talent scout.

Because of this, he left Leverkusen after more than 19 years of activity and went to 1. FC Nürnberg , where he assisted Michael Oenning . On June 6, 2009 Bayer 04 Leverkusen announced that Hermann would return as assistant to the new head coach Jupp Heynckes . Since Hermann's contract in Nuremberg ran until June 30, 2010 and he had not used an exit clause dated May 31, 2009, 1. FC Nuremberg initially resisted the change. After negotiations between the two clubs, Hermann's return came about. When Heynckes left Leverkusen after two years to become head coach at Bayern Munich for the 2011/12 season , Hermann followed him as assistant coach. With this he became German champion , Champions League winner and won the DFB Cup in the 2012/13 season .

For the 2013/14 season , FC Schalke 04 signed Hermann as a new assistant coach. His contract was dated until 2015. After a poor start to the 2014/15 season , he was on leave on October 7, 2014 together with head coach Jens Keller and goalkeeping coach Holger Gehrke .

After Hamburger SV had already been interested in hiring Hermann as assistant coach for Josef Zinnbauer during the winter break , but he had to take a break due to a thigh injury, Hermann took over the post of assistant coach to Peter, who had just been installed on March 27, 2015 Knäbel until his replacement on April 15th by Bruno Labbadia .

Peter Hermann (2016)

On May 19, 2015 Hermann signed a contract as assistant coach at Fortuna Düsseldorf under Frank Kramer . After Kramer's leave of absence on November 23, 2015, Hermann took over the interim coaching position in Düsseldorf. On his debut as head coach of Fortuna, Hermann celebrated a 2-1 win at FSV Frankfurt , the Düsseldorf team's first away win of the season. After Marco Kurz was appointed head coach with effect from January 1, 2016, Hermann resumed his duties as assistant coach under him. From March 2016 to October 9, 2017 he was Friedhelm Funkel's assistant . His contract originally ran until June 2018, but was canceled due to his move back to FC Bayern Munich .

After FC Bayern had brought Jupp Heynckes back from retirement in the search for a new coach , Hermann was bought out of the contract with Fortuna Düsseldorf at Heynckes' request and had been assistant coach again for the 2017/18 season since October 9, 2017 at FC Bayern Munich. Fortuna Düsseldorf received almost 2 million euros as a transfer fee, which is a world record for the post of assistant coach. On May 27, 2018, Hermann announced that he would end his career after the season and retire. Before that, FC Bayern wanted to keep him as assistant coach for Niko Kovač .

On July 2, 2018, Niko Kovač announced at a press conference that Peter Hermann would strengthen his coaching team from September 1, 2018. Before that, however, he should be given a break of two months for private reasons. However, Hermann started training again on the Säbener Straße on July 19 to represent Kovač during the USA trip from July 23 to 30, 2018 in Munich. During this time, u. a. the national players return to training after their World Cup vacation. After that, Hermann continued his break until September 1, 2018, before he has since fully participated in everyday training again.

One day after winning the final of the 2018/19 DFB Cup , Hermann announced that he was leaving Munich again in May 2019.

Hermann then found a job at the DFB as Frank Kramer's assistant in the German U18 national team .

Activity as a consultant

On November 20, 2019, Hermann will be available as a sports advisor to the regional league team Alemannia Aachen , for whom he was already a player in the 1970s.
