After moving from the GDR to Bertlich in the Recklinghausen district in 1956 , Röber learned to play football at his native SuS Bertlich from 1963 to 1967. Subsequently and due to relocation, he continued to play club-related football at FC Zons in the Grevenbroich district and, after his youth, came to the Bundesliga club Werder Bremen via the association league clubs CfB Ford Niehl and TuS Lingen . In the Bundesliga, Röber made his debut on October 4, 1974 (7th matchday), when he came on in the 72nd minute for Urban Klausmann in the 0-0 draw in the home game against Fortuna Düsseldorf . His first goal was the only one for Werder Bremen on April 1, 1975 (26th matchday) at the away game in Offenbach ; the game was lost 1: 5. After six years at the Weser, Röber played for two teams in the Bundesliga and one in the 2nd Bundesliga and for two abroad. After 14 appearances at Bayern Munich , for which he played in the 1980/81 season and won his only title with him, Röber moved to Canada for six months to the Calgary Boomers . This was followed by a season in England at Nottingham Forest before returning to Germany for Bayer 04 Leverkusen . After four seasons at the works club, he was still active for five seasons for the second division Rot-Weiss Essen . Röber played 303 (75 goals) first division and 104 (17 goals) second division games.

National team

Röber played three B internationals and made his debut on October 7, 1977 in Bremen in a 1-0 victory over Italy. He also played on November 15, 1977 in the 4-0 victory over Switzerland in Kaiserslautern and on October 10, 1978 in the 1: 2 defeat against Czechoslovakia in Pilsen.

As a trainer

Röber's coaching career began at Rot-Weiss Essen, where he was assistant coach from 1987 to 1991 and the main coach until 1993. After the license revocation in 1991 and relegation from the 2. Bundesliga he won in 1992 with his crew, the German Amateur Championship and returned in 1993 back to the 2. Bundesliga. An offer from the Bundesliga led to the end of his time in Essen. the team was in the semi-finals of the DFB Cup and in eleventh place in the league. Under his successor Wolfgang Frank, RWE lost 3-1 in the cup final against Werder Bremen and was relegated to third division as the penultimate. Röber was fondly remembered in Essen and was voted coach of the century by fans of the club in 2007.

On December 15, 1993, just two days after the contract was terminated in Essen, he continued his coaching work at Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart until April 25, 1995. He took over VfB as fourth in the table from Christoph Daum and finished the season in seventh. In the following season the hoped-for success failed to materialize, and Röber was replaced by Jürgen Sundermann after the 27th matchday , with whom VfB finished 12th at the end of the season.

From 1 January 1996 to 6 February 2002, he supervised the Berlin club Hertha BSC , which he for the season 1997/98 in the Bundesliga and 1998/99 to the third spot in the Champions League led. On March 4, 2003 - after more than a year without coaching - he took over VfL Wolfsburg , although he had to vacate his position on April 4, 2004. From October 6, 2005 - the day he was introduced as the successor to Vladimir Vermezović - until May 11, 2006 (the day he was released on the grounds that he was only second), he was in charge of Partizan Belgrade .

From December 19, 2006 to March 12, 2007 he was under contract with Borussia Dortmund . Although the contractual relationship was valid until the end of the season, Röber resigned after eight games with only two wins due to continued failure. From August 2008 to May 2009 Röber looked after the Russian first division team Saturn Ramenskoje together with Bruno Akrapović , but was dismissed after only one win in the 2009 season .

Since July 2009 he coached the Turkish capital city club Ankaraspor , which had to relegate to the second division after a decision by the Turkish Football Association of September 15, 2009. The reason was illegal agreements between Ankaraspor and MKE Ankaragücü . At the end of December 2009, Röber resigned from his position due to this affair. In 2011 he ended his coaching career.

After six years, Jürgen Röber returned in July 2015 as sports director to his old club Ankaraspor, which now operates under the name Osmanlıspor FK and made the return to the Süper Lig perfect in the 2014/15 season .

Since July 1, 2017 he has been the sports director of the Belgian first division club Royal Excel Mouscron in the Jupiler Pro League .
