During the winter break of the 2017/18 season, he returned prematurely to his parent club as part of the transfer of Mario Gómez from Wolfsburg to Stuttgart.

In November 2018, Brekalo made his debut in a UEFA Nations League game against Spain for the Croatian national team . With his shot from the edge of the penalty area, which Spanish goalkeeper David de Gea gave so much that Tin Jedvaj only had to push the ball over the lines, he initiated the 3-2 winner in stoppage time.
