Jeffrey Kevin van Homoet Bruma (born November 13, 1991 in Rotterdam ) is a Dutch football player . The defender is on loan from VfL Wolfsburg to 1. FSV Mainz 05 and is a Dutch national player.

Career

Beginning in the Netherlands

Born in the Dutch port city of Rotterdam, Bruma started at Excelsior Rotterdam and then joined the youth department at Feyenoord Rotterdam . However, he was not a member of the youngsters there for long, because at the age of 15 he moved to England in 2007 to join the youth department of Chelsea for a training allowance of £ 100,000 .

Change to the professional team of Chelsea

For the 2009/10 season Bruma was brought to the professional team for the first time and was part of the squad that took part in the 2009/10 UEFA Champions League in September 2009 . On October 24, 2009 he made his league and professional debut for Chelsea.

In addition to his time in the professional team, Bruma was still active in the reserve team and in the youth team. For the youth team, he scored a goal against the youth team of Aston Villa in the 2010 FA Youth Cup final . After a 2-1 win in the second leg, the team won the English Youth Cup for the first time since 1961. In the 2010/11 season Bruma was still in the squad of the professional team and was used at the season opener in the 1: 3 defeat in the FA Community Shield against Manchester United . In February 2011 he was awarded to second division Leicester City .

On loan to Hamburg

For the 2011/12 season , Bruma did not return to Chelsea, but switched to the Bundesliga for Hamburger SV on loan . He signed a one-year contract with an option for another year. On September 23, 2011 (7th matchday) he scored his first Bundesliga goal in a 2-1 win in the away game against VfB Stuttgart with the 1-1 goal. After the season, Chelsea did not use the return option. While Bruma was still a few regular players in the 2011/12 season, Michael Mancienne was preferred to Heiko Westermann in his second year .

Change to the Netherlands and return to Germany

For the 2013/14 season , Bruma did not return to London, but moved to the Netherlands for the first division club PSV Eindhoven . After three seasons in which he had played 94 games and scored seven goals, Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg signed him for the 2016/17 season and provided him with a contract that ran until June 30, 2021. In his first season he played 20 times for Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga. After a knee operation during the summer break, he only made 11 league appearances in the following 2017/18 season.

In January 2019, Bruma was loaned by FC Schalke 04 until the end of the 2018/19 season. After his return, the Dutchman played 15 competitive games in the Bundesliga, the cup and the Europa League . In the European Cup he reached the final round with Wolfsburg as second in the group. However, his competitors Marcel Tisserand and Robin Knoche were more often preferred to him.

At the end of January 2020, the central defender was loaned out to league competitor 1. FSV Mainz 05 until the end of the 2019/20 season. There the Dutchman meets his compatriots Jean-Paul Boëtius and Jerry St. Juste .

National team

Bruma gained his first international experience in June 2009 when he took part in the so-called elite round in qualifying for the U19 European Championship 2009 with the Dutch U-19 team and made his debut on June 4, 2009 in a 0-0 draw against Belarus. About three months later, the young defender made his debut for the Dutch U21 national team when he played in a qualifying match for the 2011 European Championship in Group 4 against Poland . The Dutch won the game on October 13, 2009 4-0. Bruma was used in three U19 international matches and completed nine games for the U21.

At the end of July 2010, Bruma was finally called up by bond coach Bert van Marwijk for a friendly international match against Ukraine in the squad of the Dutch senior team. At the game on August 11, 2010, Bruma and Jeremain Lens , Siem de Jong and Ricky van Wolfswinkel were three other debutants in the Dutch starting line-up. The game, in which, in addition to the four debutants who played from the start, other young Dutch talents also made their senior national team debuts, ended 1: 1. In the game, Bruma was replaced by Glenn Loovens from the 84th minute . He scored his first international goal on November 16, 2014 in Amsterdam in the European Championship qualifier for the 2016 European Championship in a 6-0 win over Latvia, with the goal to make it 4-0 in the 78th minute.
