Bruce Allen (born May 11, 1959 in the USA ) is an American theoretical physicist .

life and work

Bruce Allen studied physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and received his Ph.D. at the University of Cambridge with Stephen Hawking . From 1987 to 1989, when he returned to the USA, he was Research Assistant Professor at Tufts University . He then taught and researched physics at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee , most recently as Professor of Physics. In 2008 he came to Germany as Director and Scientific Member at the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein Institute) and Professor of Physics at the Leibniz University of Hanover . There he is Head of the Department of Observation-Based Relativity and Cosmology . The call confirmation to the Max Planck Society took place in 2006.

He heads the Einstein @ home project for distributed computing to evaluate the data from the Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory and from the GEO600 detector .

Allen's specialty is early universe physics . One of his works was the comparison of the observations of the microwave background radiation with the predictions of the theories about cosmic strings and inflation . He is an expert in the use of supercomputers for simulations and for evaluating gravitational waves . Allen was significantly involved in the discovery of gravitational waves in the Ligo collaboration, which was announced in February 2016 . He developed the analysis methods used for the data and the actual evaluation of the data transmitted from the USA.

Awards

Allen has been a Fellow of the American Physical Society since 2005 .
