Leno started playing football at SV Germania Bietigheim at the age of six and moved to the youth department of VfB Stuttgart in 2003 . In the 2008/09 season he was with the Swabians German B junior champions . During his time as a youth player, Leno made his professional debut for the reserve team of VfB Stuttgart in the 3rd division on December 19, 2009 in the 1: 2 away defeat against 1. FC Heidenheim on matchday 21 of the 2009/10 season .

In May 2011 Leno signed a professional contract with VfB until June 30, 2014. At the beginning of the 2011/12 season he rose to become the third goalkeeper of the first team, but was still used as a regular goalkeeper in the reserve team.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen

On August 10, 2011, Leno was loaned to Bayer 04 Leverkusen until the end of 2011 because their goalkeeper René Adler was out due to injury at the start of the season. Four days after the conclusion of this loan deal, which was limited to just under five months, Leno made his Bundesliga debut on matchday two in the 1-0 home win of Leverkusen against Werder Bremen . After not conceding a goal for the third time in a row in the 0-0 home game against Borussia Dortmund on the fourth matchday , Leno was named the top player of the evening by the ZDF sports studio . Before Leno, only Dirk Krüssenberg and Heribert Macherey remained clean in their first three Bundesliga games. Leno made his debut in the Champions League on September 13, 2011, the first matchday of the group stage in the 2011/12 season , in the 2-0 away defeat by Chelsea . At 19 years and 193 days he was the youngest German goalkeeper to be used in the premier class. Almost four years later Leno was replaced by Timon Wellenreuther as the youngest German goalkeeper in the Champions League: Wellenreuther played at the age of 19 years and 77 days.

On January 1, 2012, Leno finally moved permanently to Bayer 04 Leverkusen and became a regular goalkeeper. He signed a five and a half year contract until June 30, 2017. Both clubs agreed not to disclose the transfer fee.

On August 23, 2014, he played his 100th Bundesliga match for Bayer 04 Leverkusen against Borussia Dortmund.

Between February 28 and April 11, 2015 (23rd to 28th matchday of the 2014/15 Bundesliga season ) Leno did not concede a goal for 527 minutes and thus set a Leverkusen club record, which was previously set by Rüdiger Vollborn from the 1983 season / 84 had held with 485 minutes. On April 16, 2016 Leno was able to set and expand the record during the game against Eintracht Frankfurt (30th matchday of the following season ); It was not until April 23 that he had to concede a goal in the 14th minute of the away game at FC Schalke 04 , which meant that he was able to increase the new record to 588 minutes.

Immediately before the first Bundesliga home game of the 2016/17 season on September 10, 2016, Bayer 04 Leverkusen announced that Leno's contract term had been extended to the end of June 2020.

Arsenal FC

For the 2018/19 season Leno moved to Arsenal in the Premier League . With the Londoners he immediately became a regular goalkeeper.

He made his debut on May 29, 2016 in the friendly against Slovakia , in which he was called up from the start and conceded two goals. He was substituted for Ter Stegen in the second half. On May 31, 2016, he was appointed to the final EM squad. Leno was not used in the tournament. The German team was eliminated after a 2-0 defeat in the semi-finals against the hosts .
