Timon Wellenreuther (born December 3, 1995 in Karlsruhe ) is a German soccer goalkeeper . He is under contract with RSC Anderlecht in Belgium . In addition, he is a former young German national player.

Career

Club career

Wellenreuther began playing football in 2002 in the youth of Bulacher SC . In 2005 he moved to SVK Beiertheim . Via SpVgg Durlach-Aue and FC-Astoria Walldorf , he moved to the U16s of Karlsruher SC in 2010 . After 22 appearances in the B-Junioren-Bundesliga South / Southwest in the 2011/12 season, the goalkeeper moved up to the U19 in 2012, for which he made 16 appearances in the Bundesliga South / Southwest in the 2012/13 season .

For the 2013/14 season, Wellenreuther moved to the A-youth team of FC Schalke 04 . There he played eleven junior Bundesliga games and in May 2014 he reached the final of the DFB Junior Club Cup as well as the semi-finals for the championship and the UEFA Youth League . At the beginning of the 2014/15 season , the keeper signed a professional contract for the next three years and was then the third goalkeeper in the FC Schalke 04 Bundesliga team . In the first half of the season he played for the U23 in the Regionalliga West .

Wellenreuther made his professional debut on February 3, 2015 in a 1-1 away game against FC Bayern Munich when he came on at halftime for the injured Fabian Giefer . He played a total of eight games in the Bundesliga. In addition, he was in goal in the Champions League round of 16 against Real Madrid on February 18, 2015 , replacing Bernd Leno as the youngest ever used German goalkeeper in the “premier class”. On March 10, 2015, FC Schalke won the second leg against Real Madrid at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu 4: 3 with Wellenreuther in goal .

On June 25, 2015, Wellenreuther was loaned to the Spanish second division club RCD Mallorca for one year and played 33 league games there.

For the 2016/17 season , Wellenreuther returned to Gelsenkirchen, but lost out to regular goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann and was only used in the U23. In the summer of 2017 he moved to Willem II Tilburg in the Dutch Eredivisie . At Tilburg, Wellenreuther started the season as a regular goalkeeper, but lost his place to Mattijs Branderhorst after a 4-0 defeat on matchday 7 against PSV Eindhoven ; by then the team had only scored three points. At the end of the first half of the season, Wellenreuther was eliminated from the squad by coach Erwin van de Looi for "unprofessional behavior in training and outside the football field". The German only replaced his competitor in March 2018, but was subsequently able to defend his place as number 1. The 2019/20 season , which was canceled prematurely due to the COVID-19 pandemic , ended Wellenreuther with Willem II in fifth place, which meant participation in the qualification for the Europa League . Following the end of the season, he announced that he would leave the club in the summer.

On June 5, 2020, the Belgian first division club RSC Anderlecht announced their commitment until the end of the 2023/24 season. This is not qualified for the European Cup next season.

National team

In March 2015, Wellenreuther was nominated for the first time for the German U20 national team by coach Frank Wormuth . On April 21, 2015, he made his debut in the 1: 2 defeat in the international test match against the selection of Italy in Frosinone .

DFB coach Horst Hrubesch nominated Wellenreuther for the first time in August 2015 for the German U21 squad. He made his debut on September 8, 2015 in a 2-1 win in a friendly against Denmark in Lübeck.

Wellenreuther could not take part in the Olympic Games in Rio 2016 because FC Schalke did not give him a clearance for the DFB.
