On May 2, 2012, he signed his first professional contract with PSV, which was valid until summer 2015, although at that time several clubs from abroad were already showing interest in the then 16-year-old. At the beginning of the 2013/14 season he became very well known. Four days after his league debut on August 3, 2013 against ADO Den Haag , he scored his first professional goal in the third qualifying round for the Champions League against the Belgian club SV Zulte Waregem . A few days later, on August 10, he met for the first time in the Eredivisie . A three-pack in the 5-0 win against NEC Nijmegen made him the youngest player in league history to score three goals in one game. In total, he came to 16 league games in 2013/14, but no further goals were added.

After the end of his contract, Bakkali moved to Valencia CF on a free transfer in July 2015 . He signed a five-year contract. Bakkali was loaned to Deportivo La Coruña for one season in June 2017 and was signed by RSC Anderlecht a year later .

In the national team he represented Belgium in various junior selections. He was already a successful goalscorer at the U-15 level. From 2013 to 2016 he was a member of Belgium's U-21 squad. Immediately after his first goal in the Champions League, he was called up by Marc Wilmots , the coach of the senior national team, for a friendly against France in August 2013, in which he was not used. On October 15, 2013 Bakkali finally made his debut in a World Cup qualifier against Wales. Almost two years later he played his last game against Andorra .

Style of play

Bakkali is considered to be fast, ball-safe and robust, although he has grown very small. He can hold various positions on the offensive, but is preferred as a winger . His trainer Phillip Cocu praised him with the words: "He has great individual skills and is still a team player who does not neglect his defensive duties."
