Kemar "Taxi" Michael Lawrence (born September 17, 1992 in Kingston ) is a Jamaican football player on the position of a defender .

Since February 2020 he has been playing for the Belgian first division club RSC Anderlecht . In 2013 he was called up for the first time by Winfried Schäfer for the Jamaican national soccer team . By the end of 2019, he played 58 international matches, scoring three goals.

Club career

Career start at home

Kemar Lawrence was born on September 17, 1992, the son of former goalkeeper Orville "Tutus" Edwards , who was considered one of the best Caribbean goalkeepers in the 1970s and 1980s, in the Jamaican capital Kingston . His father died shortly before his 13th birthday in 2005 at the age of 53 of kidney disease; In his honor, a memorial tournament, the so-called Orville Edwards Memorial Football Festival , is held every year. In 2003 he joined the youth division of the local Rae Town FC , whose men's team is mostly represented in the second division. From there he joined the youth team of the capital city Harbor View FC in 2007 , whose men's team won the Jamaican football championship for the second time in the club's more than 30-year history at the end of this season. From 2006 to 2010, he also attended Donald Quarrie High School on the south bank of Kingston's Harbor View . In the offspring of Harbor View it held him up to and including 2008, before he made the leap into the adult area and made his first appearance in the National Premier League from the 2008/09 season and finished the season with the team in third place. In 2009/10 he graduated with his team as a master.

In the 2010/11 season , he was still used in half of the season and accordingly made 19 league appearances, in which he himself remained goalless and ended the year with the team in sixth place in the table. Also in 2012/13 he did not make many appearances and by the end of the season, when Harbor View ranked first in the table, had a record of 14 premier league appearances in which he personally remained goalless. The regular season 2013/14 closed Lawrence, who himself came to 17 goalless appearances, with the team in second place in the table, but was eliminated in the semifinals of the championship play-offs with 0: 1 against Montego Bay United , which is why he with the Team only finished third overall. At the beginning of the 2013/14 season he was appointed to the senior national team of his home country for the first time and made his official debut for the reggae boyz , the team's nickname, in November 2013 against Trinidad and Tobago . After he was appointed Jamaican brand ambassador for PepsiCo in January 2014 , he was also invited to the MLS Caribbean Combine , which was held for the first time that year in cooperation between Major League Soccer and the Caribbean Football Union , and was there alongside Jermaine Woozencroft one of only two Jamaican players. This was the second time after 2009 when he participated in the residency program of the USL First Division Team Vancouver Whitecaps that he tested for a North American professional team.

Moved to the United States

In July 2014, he also completed a two-week trial training session at the MLS franchise DC United , where a Jamaican was already under contract with Michael Seaton at that time . He finished training without receiving a concrete offer from the club. The defender then came to relatively few missions in the 2014/15 season , when he made only twelve championship appearances and two hits and finished fifth with the team. Even before the end of the season, the major league soccer franchise New York Red Bulls announced on March 16, 2015 that they had signed the 22-year-old. He made his league debut a week later when he was on the pitch for a full 90 minutes in a 2-0 home win over rivals DC United on March 22, 2015. On October 18, 2015, he scored his first goal in the highest North American football league in a 4-1 win over Philadelphia Union , which helped the team to first place in the regular season . A little later, he finished the season with the team seven points ahead of the Columbus Crew in first place in regular time and was eliminated with the team in the Conference Finals with a total score of 1: 2 from the two-way leg against said club from Columbus , Ohio . By the end of the season, the now 23-year-old Jamaican defensive player had made 23 league appearances, one hit and four assists; there were also four appearances in the semi-finals and finals of the MLS Cup Playoffs. At the end of the season, he won the MLS Supporters' Shield with the New York Red Bulls as the team with the highest points of the regular season.

RSC Anderlecht

At the end of January 2020 he moved to the Belgian first division partner RSC Anderlecht . For the first time he stood on March 7, 2020 in the game against SV Zulte Waregem for four minutes. After that, Division 1A was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic .

National team career

Junior national player and A debut

After he had already played for the U-17 team in his home country , he also played for the Jamaican U-20 national team from 2010 . In 2011 he took part in the CONCACAF U-20 championship in Guatemala , for which the team had qualified as group winners of Group C in the Caribbean qualifying phase. There, however, the team was eliminated from the current tournament after two games against Guatemala and Honduras as bottom group in Group A. In July 2013, national coach Winfried Schäfer brought him to the senior national team of Jamaica for training camps. After he was called up for the first time in September 2013 for a four-round qualifier for the 2014 World Cup against Panama , he made his official debut for the Reggae Boyz , the Jamaican national team's nickname, on November 15, 2013 in a friendly international match against Trinidad and Tobago . This was followed by another outing against Trinidad and Tobago four days later, as well as two victorious friendly internationals against Barbados and St. Lucia in early March 2014. In late May and early June 2014, Lawrence and the Reggae Boyz took part in the international tour against Serbia , Switzerland and Egypt and France part. After two narrow defeats against Serbia and Switzerland, as well as a 2-2 draw against Egypt, the team almost suffered a new record defeat when they lost 8-0 against the seemingly overpowering French.

Caribbean champion and frequently deployed regular staff

After a defeat in a friendly against Canada in September, when he also contributed his first goal, and another defeat in a friendly against Japan in October 2014, it took a shepherd in Jamaican 23-man squad, which at the Caribbean Cup in 2014 before its own audience participated. As the group winners of Group B, Jamaica defeated the group winners of Group A, Trinidad and Tobago, 4-3 on penalties in the final and won the sixth Caribbean championship in its history. After two wins in friendly international matches against Venezuela and Cuba at the end of March 2015, he was in the 23-man Jamaican squad at the 2015 Copa America in June 2015 . The 2015 Copa América in Chile , in which Jamaica and Mexico participated as visiting teams, then went through Lawrence as a regular and was used in all three games of his team until they were eliminated in the group stage. At the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2015, which was held in July 2015, there was also a member of the 23-man Jamaican squad directed by the German Winfried Schäfer. In this finals held in the United States and Canada , Jamaica made it to the finals, where they were eliminated after a 3-1 defeat against record champions Mexico. Because of this placement and winning the Caribbean Championship in 2014, Jamaica also qualified for the Copa América Centenario 2016 , a special edition of the Copa America to mark the 100th anniversary of the South American Football Association CONMEBOL for the South American Continental Championship.

At the beginning of September 2015, the head coach Winfried Schäfer, who has been in office for two years, brought him into the 27-man squad for the two qualifying games for the 2018 World Cup against Nicaragua, where he was used by the German in both games. After missing a friendly international match against South Korea in mid-October 2015, he was reinstated in two fourth-round World Cup qualifiers, a group stage, against Panama and Haiti in November 2015 . Thus, the frequently used defensive player, who quickly became a regular in the defensive line of his home country, had 58 official international matches by the end of 2019, in which he himself scored a total of three goals.
