The CONCACAF U-20 Championship ( English CONCACAF Men's Under-20 Championship ) is a football competition between the best teams in North and Central America and the Caribbean for male football players under the age of 20. The tournament will also be used to qualify for the U-20 World Cup .
The championship is organized by CONCACAF . It was held for the first time in 1962, initially at irregular intervals, later mostly every two years. The format of the tournament has changed several times over the years, and the name has also varied. Until 1997 it was called CONCACAF Youth Tournament . In the years 1998 to 2007 the tournament only served as a qualification for the U-20 World Cup and was thus held under the name Qualification for the FIFA U-20 World Cup . Since 2009, the tournament has been called the CONCACAF U-20 Championship and took place with 8 teams, which in two groups of four determined the participants for the semifinals. Since the draw in 2011, 12 teams in four groups of three have participated in the tournament.
